Reflection
As a senior engineer student, I am so blessed to live and study in Iowa State University. The work of the Iowa State University is way more than just training a qualified engineer, it accumulated my independent and critical thinking, and helped me to become a lifelong learner. In Iowa State University, we are required to take 15 credits general education curriculum. I have taken the classes from College of Human Science, Economic, Music and philosophy. These liberal education courses really cultivated my spirit – knowing what’s liberty and liability.
General education helps me to know how I am, and what kind of person I want to be. Right now, my short term goal are very clear, get a good GRE score. With that, I can apply a top graduate school and keep studying all sort of knowledges. learning process for me is really pleasure. The general education class also helps in solving engineering problems. For example, the Human Science Class taught me how to behave myself during the engineer interview, and how to communicate with our colleague more effectively. Moreover, the general education also gives me a cosmopolitan view of the problem, let me think out of the box. Every engineer has the ability to develop a decent product, but the general education background can help my product be unique and distinguished from others.
Been said that, the Iowa State University is also arguably one of the best engineering school in the world. My first engineering class was “Introduction to Electrical Engineering and Problem Solving”. Despite the contents are easy, but my professor can always formulate me and encourage me to explore the unknowns. Than in the “Electric circuits systems”, in this class, I have designed my first circuit system. It’s an active band pass filter circuit. To do that, I need to apply the knowledge from the class, as well as learning to communicate with my lab partner. I have also understand my professional and ethical responsibilities, Professors talks a lot in this. And I was also required to learning the ethical response from Case Study. This part can be found in my ethics essay.
There is no soloist in engineering. To solve class projects and problems, I always need to find the resources from library or ask people for extra help. Faculty in Iowa State are always there to help. I remember during the Thanksgiving break, I had a problem with my final project from “digital logic” class, I have sent an email to professor Koray, and he replied me with an elaborate explanation immediately. Also at the time I took “energy system and power electronics”, Professor Ian Dobson always holds two extra office hour during the weekends. I am so grateful, and they are my exemplar.
In 2014 summer, I had an internship with SH infotech. The group I joined is to design a camera which can distinguish the different type of car wheels. Basically it will sample the image from the wheels, do the image processing and compare results with the wheel parameters. The camera can replace the worker in the factory, so all different wheels can sort automatically with machine. I did the some testing part in this project. I also learned how to communicate with engineers from different areas and backgrounds. In 2015 summer, I joined the team from Harbin Institute of Technology. Our team was formed to participate the 2015 RoboMasters competition. My role in the team was to design a control system for the robot motor drive and ammunition. It required lots of knowledge form class “Automatic Control Systems”. I found it was so interesting that I am actually taking the linear system sequence now.
Iowa State University provides so many useful and interesting classes, but some are only available at fall. Because I did not pay enough attention to it, I missed many classes which I intend to take. If I could do my undergraduate work again, this is the thing I really want to fix.
