The topic discussed in our group is Case Study: Space shuttle Columbia, actually, it is quite difficult to come to a consensus about “ethics” in this case. Because “safety waiver” requires the engineers either to redesign the system to meet the requirements or to disregard the requirement. It is hard to decide when does the safety or efficiency comes to the first place. There is always a conflict between those two factors. Honesty, fidelity and responsibility are always the key to the success of a project. We need to honest to ourselves, fidelity to our customers, in the case study, people in NASA choose to ignore the problem, but the problem they ignore cause the disaster. In our current case study, charity, self-discipline is comparatively less relevant. To enforced and set out the rules of engineering; it’s a canon law for us. The purpose of this code is to guide us and to remind engineer what engineering is about. I will consider which things that matter most. For me the safety has the most priorities. When facing dilemmas, we need to consider five aspects, pressure pleasure power pride and priorities. Pressure comes in many forms, money (either my money or company’s money), schedule. Pleasure can be anything from adultery, to drink, to drugs, to gambling or anything in excess as Aristotle would view it, it’s the “if it feels good, do it attitude” that will get us in trouble, we need avoid the temptation, and develop our discipline. Pride, the dangerous pride is an exaggerated sense of self-worth to the detriment of others, it’s the bigger house, better car attitude that gets the people into trouble as well as into ethical violations.
